A rare pair of office armchairs designed by Pierre Jeanneret for the Chandigarh administrative buildings, circa 1955-1960.
With their solid teak frames, angular compass-style legs, and flat armrests, these chairs reflect Jeanneret’s clear and functional design language developed for India’s post-independence civic architecture. The handwoven cane seats and backs lend warmth and textural contrast to the strong lines of the structure, resulting in a piece that feels both utilitarian and sculptural.
Each chair bears its original hand-painted inventory code - CH/LBR/59 and CH/CUB/142 - applied by the Chandigarh government to indicate its assignment to a specific building. LBR meaning 'library' and CUB meaning 'central university block'. These numbers are now recognized as a marker of authenticity and historical context, adding depth and value for collectors.
The teak has developed a rich patina, with wear consistent with age and use. A compelling piece of design history, this pair offers a unique presence in any interior or collection.
Newly upholstered cushions available upon request.
