Jorge Zalszupin
10 3/8 x 53 1/8 x 53 1/8 inches
An iconic “Pétalas” coffee table by Jorge Zalszupin, designed circa 1959 and produced by L’Atelier. Widely regarded as one of the most important early works of Brazilian modern design, the model exemplifies Zalszupin’s mastery of form, material, and construction.
The table is composed of multiple petal-like elements in rosewood veneer over bent plywood, arranged in a radial composition around a central iron structure. This sculptural configuration creates a dynamic interplay of geometry and organic form, while the faceted volumes give the piece a strong architectural presence despite its low profile.
Zalszupin’s use of bent plywood was highly innovative in Brazil at the time, allowing for fluid yet precise forms that became central to his design language. The “Pétalas” model stands as a defining example of this approach, combining technical sophistication with a distinctly Brazilian sensibility.
